What is Endodontics – Learn About Endodontics

Root Canal Therapy Orange dentistEndodontics is a dental industry specialty focusing on the interior area of the tooth.  When a tooth is compromised by decay or an infection, the need for an Orange dentist who understands the inner workings of a tooth arises.  Today, let’s work on gaining a better understanding on how dentistry has evolved and why there is a need for endodontic services.

The Evolution of Dentistry

We’ve come a long way in oral health management.  Decades ago, people only saw a dentist when a tooth hurt.  And then, an extraction was often the only solution.  Now, with the help of research and qualified professionals, dentistry is a practice in which saving the tooth and prevention services are prominent.  Nearly one-hundred years ago, a dentist named Dr. Weston Price research and published why extracting a tooth was preferred.  Since then, of course, experts have learned that working to save the tooth is essential to oral health.  As an Orange dentist with endodontic experience, we use root canal therapy as the first step in protecting your teeth.

What is Root Canal Therapy?

The inside of our teeth consist of dental pulp and the root canal.  Pulp is a living tissue and thus affected by decay and infection.  The root canal is the chamber in which the tooth’s nerves and blood vessels live.  When these two areas are compromised, root canal therapy is needed to restore the tooth back to its health.

The procedure starts off similar to getting a cavity filled.  The decayed area is removed and the area is cleaned and then sealed.  Since root canal therapy deals with the soft area of the inside of the tooth, the next step is to strengthen the tooth.  At this point a few options are available.  You may simply need a post and crown, or you may need a dental bridge or implant.  Our Orange dentist will review your oral health history, and consider the stability of the tooth in order to make this decision with you.

How does a root canal procedure help me?

Our Orange dentist works diligently to keep your teeth in good health.  When a problem arises, our goal is to restore your smile.  A root canal procedure saves the tooth.  Without it, the tooth will continue to die, leading to the need for removal.  A root canal prevents this and leaves behind a stronger, healthier tooth.  This solution helps you avoid other procedures and is easier to maintain as it outlasts many artificial tooth options.
